In the meantime, here below is the info about the 2019 conference:The first Ojai Medical Cannabis Conference — MediCannaCon for short — took place on Saturday, May 4, 2019. Presented by the Ojai Herbal Symposium and Sespe Creek Collective with sponsor support from the Ventura County Reporter and CannaSuperior, the conference was intended for health professionals as well as those of the general public who would like to be informed by the latest science on the subject of medical cannabis. The conference was held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ojai Valley Woman’s Club, 441 E. Ojai Avenue.

David Bearman, MD
MD; Former Executive Director, American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine
One of the most clinically knowledgeable physicians in the U.S. in the field of medical cannabis, Dr. David Bearman has spent 50 years working in the substance and drug abuse treatment and prevention field. Dr. Bearman was a pioneer in the free and community clinic movement. His career includes public health, administrative medicine, provision of primary care, pain management and cannabinology. He is the former Executive Director of the American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine and the author of Cannabis Medicine.
James Adams

Jim Adams is Professor Emeritus of Pharmacology at the USC School of Pharmacy. He was trained by a Chumash Indian Healer for 14 years. Dr. Adams taught pharmacy students, medical students, doctors and other healthcare professionals for 33 years while researching the natural pharmaceutical compounds in native plants. He is co-author of the 4th edition of Healing with Medicinal Plants of the West.

This course will provide an overview of the long history of Cannabis as nutrient and medicine and present some of the attributes of the plant that act to promote health and prevent disease. It will also provide an introduction to the constituents of the plant such as cannabinoids and terpenes, including some of the useful medical applications. After completion of this course, the student will be able to:
•List the nutritive and medicinal constituents of the plant including cannabinoids and terpenes.
•Describe some of the attributes of the plant that act to promote health and prevent disease.
•Discuss some of the useful medical applications of cannabis.

This course will address the key functions and scope of activity of the human endocannabinoid system. After completion of the course the participant will be able to:
• Describe the primary components of the human Endocannabinoid System (ECS) including receptors, their areas of concentration, and their interactions with both endogenous and phytocannabinoids.
• Describe the role of the ECS in modulation/control of various functions and systems within the body.
• Describe the concept of the Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency Syndrome (CEDS) and its role in human health.

Cannabis sativa can be effectively used to treat several conditions. Smoking is sometimes not the best route of administration for C. sativa. Oral and topical administration can be better for some conditions.
• The participant will be able to contrast "full-spectrum" Cannabis with isolates of the plant.
• The participant will be able to explain how smoking or vaporizing C. sativa improves type 2
diabetes.
• The participant will be able to analyze the mechanism of action of C. sativa in irritable bowel syndrome.

This lecture will cover the nurse’s role of educating the patient on cannabinoid therapeutics, including selection of safe and appropriate products, drug interactions, dosing, and methods of ingestion. Upon completion of this class, the student will be able to
• Identify the best cannabinoids and terpenes to address common symptoms.
• Check for drug interactions between prescription medications and cannabis, and how to deal with them.
• Apply the "start low/go slow" process of cannabis dosing.
• Select the best methods of ingestion for the patient and their health needs.

The entourage effect explains how the psychoactive and other effects of THC are changed by cannabidiol and other compounds in Cannabis sativa. This involves CB1, CB2, TRP channels and other receptors. Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
• Distinguish the medical uses of cannabidiol from the uses of THC.
• Explain how cannabidiol works against anxiety.
• Evaluate the use of topical medicines in pain and migraines.
